It’s natural for Cal Tjader to take a stab at ‘The Fakir’ considering her long-professed love for InFOCUS. It has been seven years Cal Tjader’ last studio CD, “Several Shades Of Jade / Breeze From The East” which won Washington Area Music Awards and was nominated for album of the year. seven years ago, Cal Tjader briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Cherry Blossoms”. Such great and happy songs.
Cherry Blossoms is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Tokyo Blues is a perfect, simple song by Cal Tjader at the top of his game. You have to get essence of the Song Of The Yellow River’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Sahib is a medium tempo tune. I’ve found myself listening to China Nights (Shina No Yoru) back to back and back many times. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. Sake And Greens is the funkiest number on the album. Cha - This is a very lively song. Leyte - My least favorite song on this album. Shoji - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. China Nights (Shina No Yoru) is Cal Tjader’s best work in years. Fuji to me is the best you can get from Cal Tjader. If you are a Cal Tjader fan, you will love Black Orchid. Theme From Burke’s Law is the albums lead single as well as biggest hit. Star Dust is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Once you hear Poinciana, you will listen to it over and over. East Of The Sun (And West Of The Moon) which is my favorite is a truly Cal Tjader sounding song. It’s a great pleasure to listen to Cha from the beginning to the end. Music in Star Dust is astounding as in all tracks of Several Shades Of Jade / Breeze From The East.
